Hokusai and others learned about the composition of Western paintings.

In his Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji, we can see the influence of perspective used in Western paintings.

He later developed his own style.

He used simple shapes such as circles and triangles to decide the composition of his works.

Prussian blue is a beautiful blue paint never used in Japanese-style artwork before.

With this strong color for the waves, Hokusai has impressed people through the ages.

In the Edo Period, many Japanese plates and dishes were shipped to Europe.
江戸時代には、たくさんの日本の食器がヨーロッパに船で運ばれました。
Surprisingly, ukiyo-e prints were used to wrap them.
驚くことに、浮世絵画は、それらを包むために使われていたのです。
From the 1860s, about ten years after Hokusai died, many painters in Europe became interested in those ukiyo-e prints.
1860年代、北斎の死後10年くらいは、ヨーロッパの多くの画家達は、浮世絵画に興味を持ちました。
They found it new that no shadow was drawn and no subject was placed in the center.
彼らは、影がなく、中央に主題が描かれていないことに新しさを見出しました。
They even used these ways of drawing ukiyo-e in their own paintings.

This trend is called “Japonism.”
