After three weeks, the day for giving the prizes arrived.
それから3週間後、授賞式の日がやってきた。
First prize was 20,000 dollars and the chance to go on concert tours all over the world, a dream for any young musician.
優勝賞金2万米ドルに、若手音楽家にとっては夢の、世界中をめぐるコンサートツアーの機会が与えられる。
Everybody waited anxiously as the announcements were made.
みんな不安な気持ちで受賞者の発表を待っていた。

First, they named the second prize winner: a pianist from South Korea who had become one of Nobu’s closest friends.
まず、準優勝者の名前が呼ばれた。韓国出身のピアニストで、ノブさんの親友の一人だった。
And then the first prize winner was announced: a 19-year-old pianist from China.
そして次に優勝者が発表された。19歳の中国出身のピアニストだった。
Nobu thought that he had lost, but still felt happy to be one of the finalists.
ノブさんは敗れたと思ったが、それでも決勝出場者の一人になれたことがうれしかった。
He had been able to play two concertos with an orchestra.
彼はオーケストラと協奏曲を2曲演奏することができたのだ。
He was not a winner, but he was still happy.
彼は受賞しなかったが、それでも満足だった。

A few moments later, however, his name was called.

There were two first prize winners!

Both Nobu and the Chinese pianist received gold medals.

Van Cliburn embraced him on the stage.
ヴァン・クライバーンさんはステージの上でノブさんを抱きしめた。
Tears flowed from Nobu’s eyes.
ノブさんの目から涙が流れた。
They were tears of thanks for the help and support of his family, teachers, and friends.
それは彼の家族、先生、友人たちの協力や後押しへの感謝の涙だった。
