Wisdom of a Fool
愚か者の知恵
Mullah Nasrudin was a wise man who sometimes acted like a fool.
ムラ・ナスレッディンは時おり愚か者のようにふるまう賢い人だった。
There are many funny stories told about him.
彼について語られた物語はたくさんある。
They are well known in the Middle East and Central Asia.
これらの物語は中東や中央アジアではよく知られている。
Some stories have a moral, like Aesop’s Fables, others are like Ikkyu-san stories, and still others are simply jokes.
イソップ物語のような寓話もあれば、一休さんのような物語もあり、さらには単なる笑い話もある。

Ⅰ. BACK TO FRONT
Mullah Nasrudin was visited by some students.
何人かの学生がムラ・ナスレッディンを訪ねてきた。
They wanted to hear his lessons.
学生たちはムラの講義を聞きたがった。
He agreed, and they set out toward the classroom.
ムラは承諾して、みんなで教室へ向かった。
The students walked behind the Mullah.
学生はムラの後からついて行った。
He was sitting on his donkey backward.
ムラはロバに後ろ向きにまたがっていた。
People began to stare.
人々がじろじろと見はじめた。
They thought that the Mullah was a fool, and that the students following him were even bigger fools.
ムラを愚か者だと思った。彼に従う学生はさらに愚か者だと思った。
Who walks behind a man who rides a donkey back to front?
後ろ前にロバに乗るような男の後を誰がついて行くだろうか？
After a little while the students said to the Mullah:
間もなく学生たちがムラに言った。
“Oh, Mullah! People are looking at us.
ああ、ムラ！人が私たちを見ています。
Why do you ride that way?”
なぜそのようにロバに乗るのですか？
Nasrudin said, “You are thinking more about what people think than what you are doing.
「君たちは自分が何をしているかよりも人がどう思うかのほうが気になるのだな」とムラは言った。
I shall explain it to you.
教えてあげよう。
If you walk in front, that shows disrespect for me, because you have your backs toward me.
もし君たちが先頭を歩けば、それは私に対して無礼だ。なぜなら君たちは私に背中を向けているからだ。
If I ride ahead with my back toward you, this shows disrespect for you.
もし私が君たちの前方でロバにまたがり背中を向ければ、これは君たちに対して失礼だ。
This is the only way of doing it.”
これが唯一の方法なのだ。

Ⅱ. THE TRUTH NEVER CHANGES
A famous teacher was giving a speech about an ancient philosophy.
ある有名な教師がある古代哲学について講演した。
Mullah Nasrudin listened carefully, then asked a question:
ムラ・ナスレッディンはじっくり聞いてそれから1つ質問をした。
“The world has changed a lot since this philosophy was written.
この哲学が書かれてから世界はずいぶん変わりました。
Is it still true today?”
現代にもやはり同じことが言えますか？ “Of course it is,” said the teacher.
「もちろんそうです」と教師は言った。
Then he went on to laugh at Nasrudin:
そしてナスレッディンをばかにして続けてこう言った。
“This is the sort of question which ignorant people always ask.The truth never changes!”
「これは無知な人が必ずたずねる類の質問ですよ。事実は決して変わりません！」 Some time later, Mullah Nasrudin needed a job.
それから少し後、ムラ・ナスレッディンは仕事が必要になった。
He saw an ad for a gardener and applied.
庭師の募集広告を見て応募した。
The famous teacher was the one who had placed the ad.
広告を出したのはあの有名な教師だった。
“You’re pretty old, aren’t you?” said the teacher.
「君はずいぶん年を取っているようだが？」とその教師は言った。
“I am not sure that you’re strong enough for this job.”
「この仕事に耐えられるほど強いとは思えないね」
“Time has nothing to do with it,” said Nasrudin.
「年は関係ありません」とナスレッディンは言った。
“I was strong 20 years ago, and the truth never changes.”
「20年前は強かったですよ。その事実は決して変わりません」 The teacher was not sure, but he gave Nasrudin the job.
教師は確信が持てなかったもが、ナスレッディンに仕事を与えた。
The next day, the teacher told Nasrudin to move a 100-kilo stone from one part of the garden to another.
次の日、教師はナスレッディンに庭にある重さ100キロの石を庭の別の場所へ移動させるように言った。
The Mullah looked at the stone and said, “I can’t move it.”
ムラはその石を見て言った。「それは動かせません」
“I thought you said that you were as strong as you were 20 years ago,” said the teacher.
「君は20年前と同じぐらい強いと言っていたと思うが」と教師が言った。
“That’s right,” answered Nasrudin,
「ええ、その通りです」とナスレディンは答えた。
“I am just as strong as I was 20 years ago.
私はまったく20年前と同じぐらい強いです。
I couldn’t move a 100-kilo stone then, either.”
その時だって100キロの石は動かせませんでした。

Ⅲ. HOW TO GIVE A SPEECH
Mullah Nasrudin was asked to give three speeches at Friday services at the mosque.
ムラ・ナスレッディンはイスラム教寺院の金曜日の礼拝で3つの演説をするように頼まれた。
But Nasrudin was lazy.
ところがナスレッディンはなまけ者だ。
He kept putting off preparing his speech until it was too late.
演説の準備を先延ばしにして間に合わなくなった。
He found himself in front of the people at the mosque, but he had nothing to say.
寺院では人々の前に出たものの話すことが何もなかった。
He tried to think of something, but finally, he could stall no longer.
何か話すことがないか思い出そうとしたが、とうとう、もう時間かせぎはできなくなった。
“How many of you know what I’m going to say today?” he asked.
「私が今日話すことが分かる人はどれくらいいますか？」とナスレッディンはたずねた。
“Please raise your hands.”
「手をあげてください」
No one raised a hand because they had no idea what Nasrudin was going to say.
誰も手をあげなかった。ナスレッディンがこれから話すことが何なのかさっぱりわからなかったからだ。
Nasrudin laughed and said, “Why should I waste my time on such ignorant people?
ナスレッディンは笑ってこう言った。「なぜ私がこんな教養のない人たちに時間をむだにしなきゃいけないのですか？」
Go home and come back better prepared next week.”
家に帰ってもっと準備して来週また来てください。
The next Friday Mullah Nasrudin was still not prepared to speak.
次の金曜日、ムラ・ナスレッディンはやはり話す準備をしなかった。
He got up and asked the same question.
彼は立ち上がると同じ質問をした。
This time everybody raised their hands because they did not want to appear stupid.
今度は全員が手をあげた。おろか者に見られたくなかったからだ。
Mullah Nasrudin smiled and said, “Good! Since you all know what I’m going to say, I won’t have to tell you.
ムラ・ナスレッディンはほほえんでこう言った。「すばらしい！みなさん私がこれから何を言うのか分かっているので、私がお話しする必要はありません」
Goodbye.”
さようなら
The next Friday, the people planned ahead because they did not want Mullah Nasrudin to get away with the same trick again.
その次の金曜日、ムラ・ナスレッディンにまた同じ手口でごまかされたくなかったので、人々は前もって計画をした。
When he asked the question, they looked at each other with knowing looks and half of them raised their hands and half didn’t.
ナスレッディンが例の質問をすると、人々はわけ知り顔でお互いを見て、半分の人は手をあげて、半分の人は手をあげなかった。
But again, Mullah Nasrudin got the better of them.
しかし今回もムラ・ナスレッディンは人々を出し抜いた。
He said, “That’s wonderful. Those of you who know what I’m going to say can tell those who don’t know.”
ナスレッディンはこう言った。「これはすばらしい。私がこれから話すことが分かる人は分からない人に教えられますね。」
And he went home.
そして彼は家へ帰った。
