Nearly everyone agrees that the Internet helps us to gather information.

In 2008 the writer Nicholas Carr wrote an essay, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”

He says that the Internet is changing the way we think.
彼はインターネットが私たちの物の考え方を変えつつあると言う。

“Recently an American school announced that its library books would be replaced with computers.
先日、あるアメリカの学校が図書館の本をコンピュータに換えるという発表をしました。
The school thinks that the words in books are the same if they appear on paper or on a computer.
この学校では本の中の言葉はそれが紙の上に現れようがコンピュータの画面上に現れようが同じだと考えています。
But reading on a computer is very different from reading a book.
しかし、コンピュータ上での読書は本を読むのとはぜんぜん違います。
A book focuses our attention, keeping us from distractions.
本は私たちを集中させて、気が散らないようにさせます。
A computer does not protect us from distractions; it adds to them.
コンピュータは気が散らないようにはしてくれません。むしろ気が散るようにさせます。

“My own reading and thinking have changed greatly since I started using the Web.
